This
clock was inspired by a custom tile I carved for a friend. The leaping dolphins
came first, and in keeping with the ocean theme I conceived of starfish
to replace the numbers of the clock. I picked clock hands that, for some
reason, reminded me of Neptune's trident (even though they aren't three-pronged...) |

I
call this clock "Keeping Time". I have to admit that it was one
of the most fun tiles I've ever created. One day I sat sketching ideas for
alternative clock faces. Being a violinist, I'm not able to help but have
music images often floating around in my head, so I started playing with
all the symbols that came to mind. Most of the symbols are aptly replacing
a corresponding number (musicians out there will appreciate this most).
For instance, I used a quarter note for the number 3...quarter past; the
bass clef for the number 9 actually looks like a 9; the double sharp for
number 10 actually looks like a roman numeral X, and so on. The finishing
touch of the clock face is the circular staff. In recognizing that a chromatic
scale has 12 half-steps, I carved 12 measures into my staff. Starting at
the number one, I chose the note E flat to begin. As you proceed around
by ascending 1/2 steps to 12 you arrive at the note D, where a repeat sign
directs you to begin at E flat again. |

This
clock is called "Fiddle Time". Everything about the carving of
this tile clockface is suggestive of the curves of a violin- from the scrolls
at 3, 6, 9 and 12 to the little fiddles marking all the other numbers. Lastly
the abstract square center hints at the profile of four violin sides. |
